let’s plan something special
Proposal Photography in Ireland
A proposal in Ireland - what could be more romantic?
What about making it a surprise proposal at the Cliffs of Moher, followed by a beautiful engagement photo session to share your exciting news with the world?
Yep. That’ll do it.
Planning a proposal in Ireland is exciting and maybe a little bit overwhelming too. I’m here to help you every step of the way.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
Do you want your proposal to be as quiet & intimate as possible, or do you want to make a big splash? If it’s a surprise, then what are the plans you’re making together and where will the proposal fit in?
Don’t worry, we’ve got this. I’m going to help you plan the perfect proposal to surprise her & sweep her off her feet.
Let’s Get Started…
-1-
Choose Your Location
While I love photographing a Cliffs of Moher proposal, there are so many beautiful locations in Ireland from the banks of the River Shannon, to the ancient walls of a castle, to all along the Wild Atlantic Way. If you already know where you want to propose, I’d love to meet you there. But if you know you want to propose at the Cliffs of Moher, here are some ideas for the best place to pop the question:
OPTION 1 - Private & Intimate
1) Moher Tower: stunning landscape, fewer people, a bit of a walk
2) Guerin’s Path: views for days, fewer people, mucky
OPTION 2 - A Big Suprise
1) The Visitor Center / O’Brien’s Tower: very popular with loads of people & a great buzz. Classic view of the cliffs, and somewhere to hide in case it rains.
-2-
Make a Plan
Once you know where you’re going to propose, then we will decide when & how to pop the question. I will arrive ahead of time with a cover story (I’ve got lots of ideas) and let you know where I’ll be. We’ll create a secret signal (are you feeling like a spy yet) so you can let me know to be ready, and I’ll be there to get it all.
Ideas I’ve used:
“Let’s get couples photos while we’re in Ireland”
“I’m a photographer creating some social media images for the castle, would you mind if I took a photo of you for our instagram?”
[minding my own business with landscape photos and “noticing” a couple taking a selfie] “Would you like me to take a photo of the two of you? [hands phone back] Will I get one with my camera? I can email you the picture if you’d like.

Engagement Photos
After she says “yes” (and she will) it is always nice to have an engagement session. These photos can be used to share the good news, on your save the date and wedding stationary, but mainly to celebrate this wonderful, exciting, life-changing moment!
I have several proposal and engagement packages (and even more ideas) to make this day the best ever.

Get in Touch
Marie is the best photographer I’ve had the pleasure of meeting!
I connected with her via Facebook before my trip to Ireland from Atlanta, Georgia. She helped me coordinate and pull off the perfect surprise proposal at the Cliffs of Moher! Marie is a truly special person. I felt as if I’ve known her for years.. and that’s exactly how our photo shoot felt. She made my fiancé and I feel so comfortable and it was so easy being natural with her.
We couldn’t be more happy with Marie’s work. Her passion for what she does is so evident. Thanks again for everything, Marie. We will see you again! If you are looking for the best photographer in Ireland… contact Marie!
KIND WORDS
-Matt Deese-
Want to see my top two locations to pop the question and what a surprise proposal at the Cliffs of Moher looks like?
1: Moher Tower, Cliffs of Moher Proposal & Engagement Session
For this surprise proposal, I pretended to be a tourist, exporing & photographing the views. I marked the spot with a few white stones, and waited for them to come down the path. Matt was perfect. He started to take a selfie but “saw me” and asked if I’d do it. After a quick phone snap, I asked if they’d like a “proper” photo - when he said yes please, I asked Lauren to turn and look at the view which was the cue for Matt to go down on one knee. And she said yes!
Even better! Matt knew that Lauren would want photos in a dress & not hiking clothes, so we met up the next day for 2 hours of laughter and romance. But that’s not the end of our story! They flew me out to Georgia to photograph their wedding! Best. Day. Ever.
2: Cliffs of Moher Surprise Proposal at the Visitor Centre
He wanted to find a private, quiet place and we did - even if we had to walk and walk to get there. For this surprise proposal at the Cliffs of Moher, Brandon told me that they would be making a quick stop at the visitor centre. I got there ahead of time, and armed with a photo of what they were wearing, watched and waited.
After a while they showed up but Stephanie had her own ideas! She wanted to stop for photos of the cliffs, the sea, and the sheep. I completely ignored them trying hard to pretend I was just doing my own thing. I think she got a little suspicious, but when he finally stopped in the middle of the narrow path, she couldn’t have been more surprised!
A quick 30 minutes of engagement photos and trekking back to the cafe, including a call home with the good news, and they were off to celebrate!
Cliffs of Moher Surprise Proposal Photos
This was, by far, the windiest day I have ever spent at the Cliffs. We had a plan. The plan went not to plan. But it ended up perfect.
For this proposal, Devon told Jaki that we would be taking couples photos at the visitor centre toward the evening to avoid the crowds. From there we headed to the private car park at Hags Head, took the path up, but it was so windy we were all a little worried. Undaunted, I gave Jaki my boots, we headed down the path and laughed the whole time. She was 10000% surprised when she turned around to see Devon with a ring.
And can you believe it - a rainbow appeared! It was a match approved by the heavens. We had such an amazing time that we had to make one more stop by the shore, and by the end of our 2 hours, we were fast friends. And I was honoured to be asked to fly out to Indiana to photograph their wedding. Truly an evening to cherish.
